Dear Dr. Dixon,
When I applied the Pain Relief Formula to my entire sore back it was not uncomfortable at all and within 20 minutes my back felt a lot better - Thank You!!! However, when my husband applied three sprays to his elbow, within 5 minutes he said it was very uncomfortable and that it was burning. I thought he was faking and I teased him, but we washed it off anyway with cool water and in about 30 minutes he was fine. Should I have teased him, or was he really serious?

Good question. He was not faking. Approximately 4-7% of the population will experience more discomfort (prickly heat sensation) after application of Pain Relief than others and about 1% can not tolerate it at all and will have to wash it off.

For the 4-7% that experiences the prickly, itchy sensation – simply wiping the area a few times with a damp hand will soon ease any discomfort, while not diminishing effectiveness. If this procedure does not significantly ease the discomfort within 5 minutes, it can be repeated. If this is not effective, or it is just too uncomfortable to start with, one should rinse the area with cool water for approximately 3 minutes, pat dry, and if available, apply a little Aloe Vera gel. This is a topical sensitivity reaction, or a local allergy, that is most likely caused by the DMSO and will have no negative systemic (whole body) or lasting side effects. So be patient and the discomfort will fade.

At first we thought it was something that was more apt to happen in very fair skinned individuals, but over the years it has become apparent that all ranges of skin color are affected evenly. So… if you are able to tolerate the discomfort by wiping the area with a damp hand, the results will be very much worth it! But if you’re not, simply return the unused portion and we will be happy to issue a complete refund for the purchase price of the product, minus shipping & handling.
